Marion County high school students aspiring to military service will again have an academy of their own.
The Marion Military Academy charter school closed suddenly in December. And some of its 185 cadets found a new temporary home at Marion Technical Institute in Ocala.
Now the district has formed the Military Career Academy at MTI based on U.S. Army leadership principles. Eighth through 11th grade students from anywhere in the county can sign up.
The district says it is not for kids with behavioral problems but a rigorous, full day, academically oriented, military-themed program.
The students will wear uniforms.
Activities will include military competitions, drill teams and marksmanship.
And the academy has a partnership with the Army ROTC at Florida State University for mentoring and campus visits.
